About Me

Hello UBC Friends! My name is Davey Li and I'm running to be one of your Student Senators At-Large and Science Senator. I’m a 4th-year Microbiology and Immunology student and I’m passionate about driving sustainable and systemic improvements for student wellness through iterative change. Witnessing and listening to lived experiences/challenges of the UBC community continues to fuel my commitment to advocate and help improve many issues students face.

My 2 years as the previous Science Undergraduate Society (SUS) VP and AVP Academic have given me experience in representing student interests on many UBC Faculty Level Committees, liaising student needs, leveraging data-driven advocacy, and initiative implementation which I hope to continue to do so if elected as Senator.

The past few years have only highlighted fundamental flaws within UBC’s support systems and policies. As your Student Senator, I aim to advocate for accessibility, lecture capture/hybrid learning, compassionate academic policy, reduced cost of learning, and increased transparency among many other things while listening to students every step of the way.

So what do Student Senators do?

Student Senators represent and advocate for students on Senate, the highest academic governing body at UBC!

What does the Senate do?

  • Creates and passes university policies/procedures seen on the academic calendar

  • Approves course curriculum, new departments, and confers degrees

  • Creates policies and hears appeals on a number of topics ranging from admissions, academic discipline, awards, academic standing, examinations, etc...

  • Evaluate and discuss teaching/learning practices and student experience of instruction

  • Review building projects/priorities

  • And much more!

Different Senate standing committees focus on different areas to create and maintain specific university policies! (Click the link to see the full list)

Compassionate Academic Policy/Course Withdrawal

Reducing the Cost of Learning

Building Space Accessibility

Improving Senate Transparency

Compassionate Academic Policy/Course Withdrawal

  • Advocate for extended Cr/D/F and Withdrawal period to match other North American universities.

  • Advocate for increased flexibility of Standing Deferral Examination scheduling and earlier grade release to minimize disruptions in course registration.

Lecture Recording and Hybrid Learning

  • Advocate for the strategic use of lecture recording and hybrid education to support and enhance in-person learning while considering factors such as privacy, intellectual property, and engagement.

  • Help identify and overcome current barriers to the integration of online-learning mediums to maximize accessibility through groups such as the Senate Teaching and Learning Standing Committee and UBC Learning Technology Advisory Group.

  • Improve integration of teaching and learning feedback by optimizing student experience of instruction surveys.

Reducing the Cost of Learning

  • Advocate for UBC to adopt more Open Education Resources.

  • Advocate for UBC to eliminate digital learning assessment tools that students have to purchase. No student should have to pay to do their homework and receive their grade.

  • Advocate for increased consistency in course credit assignment to reduce student tuition costs and fairly assign credit value respective to contact-hour requirements. (ex: Anomalous course with no lab assigned 4 credits costing students an extra $194.78+)

Building Space Accessibility

  • Accessibility is critical for a safe and healthy campus community. Out of the 189 buildings on campus, 49 buildings are inaccessible and 50 have no information on accessibility according to the UBC Wayfinding program. Universal design must be implemented as it is unacceptable that entire departments, laboratory buildings, and lecture areas are inaccessible.

  • Advocate for increased universal design and community consultations for future UBC infrastructure planning with Campus and Community Planning/Campus Vision 2050.

  • Propose recommendations on centralizing accessibility information, and updating accessibility routing maps through Academic Building Needs.

  • Hold UBC accountable through transparency on its accessibility certification audit results from the Rick Hansen Foundation.

Improving Senate Transparency

  • Advocate for Senate Standing Committee meeting minutes to be posted in a more regular and timely fashion.

  • Implement term town halls to create opportunities for transparency, open discussion and for students to convey their concerns while continuing The Ubyssey Senate Recentred articles.

  • Improve the transfer of institutional knowledge within the Student Senate Caucus and among the UBC community.

  • Creation of concerns forms on the student senator website for students to easily and anonymously submit concerns and liaise with the AMS VP Academic to be regularly updated about student issues brought up.
